To give this page some historical context, the Butler or Valet would basically be the lord of the other servants. He would have been in charge of hiring them, giving them their duties, punishing them and, of course, firing them. Seeing Jefferson call John Sir is therefore more shocking than well… many other things James might have dreamed up.
Jefferson’s blush is just fantastic. And I think James may be *just* a bit titillated by the interplay, in addition to being shocked at hearing his butler calling John “Sir.”
