“but if were allowed to” – What? Allowed to what? This series has confused me more than once…
I think he’s saying if he were allowed to have sex with the boy/young master, it would be unforgivable. Boy would be like a son to him as the family butler. So it would be a taboo in multiple ways.
I just want to hug him and say, “Oh, sweetie, there is nothing depraved about consensual fun. You can pretend it’s depraved if you want to, but there is nothing actually wrong with doing it.” Not sure where he is going with this “beyond forgiveness” stuff.
Also, curious about this “but if I were allowed to–” part. Maybe the next one will make it more clear.
I totally agree. Nothing wrong as long as everyone’s giving informed consent.
About the “being allowed to”, I’d guess he has conflicted emotions about sexual contact with his Sir. As in, desires it but is terrified.
I think part of why Tab is putting so much effort into this backstory is because it *is* questionable- not because of the BDSM interaction, but because of the potential real-world power issues between employer/employee and older/younger, which would complicate any sexual relationship. With such a real-world power disparity, it would be very difficult for any individual to be certain they really had fully informed consent. We know everything because have multiple POVs and Tab has made a point to show us scenes that address the most likely problems, but none of the characters have more than their own POV.

I find it a bit funny because I am drastically younger than my partner, and yet I am the dominant in the relationship. Though I understand how I am the exception that proves the rule, I giggle every time I hear age as causing a power imbalance.
I don’t mean it’s always a problem, and I hope I didn’t sound like I was saying that any relationship with an age disparity was bad. It’s just something someone has to be particularly careful of, especially if you’ve been in a caretaker role previously.

They’re gay men into BDSM during what appears to be the Victorian era. The cultural mores of the time put them in the “you should be ashamed” category.
This. It’s as much to do with the era that this particular story is set in as it does with the social structure. They *do* think that they should be ashamed, and homosexual acts were actually illegal… If they were caught out and put on trial, they’d easily be sentenced to a number of months of hard labour. The young Master might just be whisked off to the countryside by his well-to-do parents.
Is it really the Victorian era or is the Victorian clothing and behavior all for show? I thought BDSM clubs were a fairly newish thing (newish as in the latter half of the 20th century).
