My guess: Tom got a mastektomy – or a new piercing. That’s why he can’t shower?
I think this was mentioned in a previous post from Tab – if I remember rightly, Tom’s had a double mastectomy, and he’s still going through the recovery process at this point, hence his inability to shower properly.
yeah I think that would made the most sense as well. His chest would still be very sensitive with stitches and the still healing wounds and he probably wouldn’t be allowed to raise his arms to wash his hair himself
I think there’s been some Word of God clarification somewhere that I’ve missed. In-story it could be just a new tattoo (which was my first guess), but I think from the hints in the comments that it’s a bigger deal than that: a surgical part of the transitioning process.

I cheated and just went back to the Kickstarter page where Tab told us what the new short stories would be about:
NEW Tom and Alex side story updated on the Khaos site, 2 updates a week for 5 weeks.
Tom’s back on his feet after chest surgery and looking at Alex like he wants to tumble. But with scars come insecurity, and with surgery comes awkward logistics. How will our boys overcome the hurdles and get back to the sex life they used to share?
So, mastectomy guesses are the correct ones :)

Unless wait… Tom leaned in for smoochies and Alex pulled away. I AM SO LE CONFUSED BUT EXCITED TO SEE MORE!

This is going to be awesome. I can’t wait to see how Tom deals with having a man chest. I know when I get my man chest its going to feel so unreal.

I’ve been re-reading the ‘Tom and Alex’ volume, and noticed Tom’s comment about covering up scars with tattoos. Wonder if this story will involve making a new tat plan?
I’ll happily help him play dot the dots to plan new tatoo’s :)
I thought some kind of surgery too. You can shower with new piercings and tattoos if careful, but surgery stitches really needs to be left completely alone for at least a week, usually more.
yay Tom&Alex! I’m glad Tom is keeping the orange, it suits him like orange on a traffic cone.

And now… I want to say something more deep and profound about how I feel and how Tom might be feeling, but I don’t think I can articulate it well enough.

I remember this from Tab’s Kickstarter page (and I believe this is a direct quote): “Tom’s just had top surgery and looking at Alex like he wants to tumble.” XD
Also, I once met a guy coming straight from his mastectomy (I tagged along with a friend picking up him and his boyfriend from the airport), and he was pretty groggy. I told him that on the plus side, he didn’t have to deal with binders anymore, and I managed to make him chuckle a little.
I was wrong about it being a direct quote :(. Oh well.
