well actually, people who have been known to have had a sexually abused past need bondage. Like, being tied up could make someone feel more secure and restrained so they wouldn’t have to worry about their actions. If they have some sexual shame it really puts the power into the other persons hands. If the other person is tied up, they don’t feel threatened that they might lash out and they have all the control. Again this isn’t for everyone but I have heard of it on multiple occasions.

Whoa, chill out. Gourd made the mistake of saying they “need” it at first, but corrected at the end by saying “this isn’t for everyone,” and that’s true, some need it but not everyone. I was sexually assaulted twice in my youth, and I like to be tied up. I don’t “need” it, but I like that it takes away the fear of doing something potentially abusive, and if I suddenly panic (which hasn’t happened in 15 years, but I still worry I might again some day) then at least I won’t hurt my partner. I know of others like that, too. To some, it’s cathartic to experience that fear and work through it on their own (totally consensual) terms. To others, it’s an emotional necessity, fearing the darkness within them, fearing to become an abuser, to the point of not trusting themselves. And I know a victim of sexual assault who, if you even grab her wrist in a completely non-sexual way, she goes catatonic. We all deal with past trauma in our own way. We like what we like. Sometimes our past factors into our likes and needs, and sometimes, as the Lady said, “we’re born that way.” For Jamie, whose fear is becoming abusive (sort of like me), bondage frees him from that fear. It’s probably not something he “needs” but more like he feels comfortable this way… and I’m sure Charlie loves to feel empowered over her man! :D

I agree with Anon. I was abused — being tied up would be the stuff of nightmares for me! And I wouldn’t want a partner to be tied up either, for the same reason Jamie wouldn’t want to tie Charlie up. Blindfold is fine if there’s enough trust, but ropes and gags are not.

Remember, Jamie’s biggest fear is becoming like his abuser. This is why he’s always had a thing for women who dominate him during sex – he feels that if they’re “in charge”, there’s much less risk of him doing something that hurts them.

as an audience member, i find charlie and jamie’s sexy time especially meaningful because they’ve had to work so hard to get there.
Jamie’s had to work really really hard and deal with so much to be able to get to the point where he’s able to be this intimate with charlie.
i’m happy on a personal note (cause i love this couple!) and also because this is an important subject that so many survivors of abuse and their loved ones have experienced. it’s empowering to see a character learning to prevent sexual abuse and related trauma from getting in the way of type of intimacy/relationship they want to have with a loved one. it’s a really positive thing to see.
basically though, seeing jamie happy with charlie is just so so great and feeling provoking. so many feelings!!<3
